Each new employee must be trained thoroughly on one process before they are allowed to move onto the next process.

If you have hired a new employee to start on the production floor, the best place to start is at the end of the process, regardless of what you have hired them for. Start them trimming, folding and packing. This helps them to see how the process is finished and helps to get them excited to learn more.

If a new employee cannot trim, they need to be dismissed. This is a very basic function, but takes a lot of dexterity and attention to detail. Many people feel that this part of the process is for low paying individuals that cannot do anything else. This could not be farther from the truth. A trimming mistake can ruin the entire process if close attention is not paid to detail. They need to have a positive attitude and their attitude will really show up during this process.

They can then be moved into a helper’s position. A helper is someone that can help tie new threads onto the machine, load and unload the machine, carry work from the hooping area to the machine and carry the finished work from the machine to the trimmers. The training of this helper is very important. They must be shown every thing that they are supposed to do and thoroughly tested on these skills. This sounds like it is so simple that anyone should be able to do it, but they need to be taught exactly how each step is done.

When people are trained properly there is less spoilage, less down time and more co-operation.

For more information about working with employees visit Embroidery Business Success. I wrote a book that is now available about how to start and create a profitable embroidery business. In this book is a chapter to help you through the process of selecting and training your new employees.

I have received so many requests for this type of training, so I decided to add it to the Embroidery Webinar Of The Month sessions. Getting your business on line is not easy and creating a marketing system that will help you to connect to your customers is not easy if you do not have the right kind of guidance in this area. I have found that many embroiderers do not know how to get started in creating a website for their business, and do not know who to ask for help.

Creating an on-line presence does not have to be difficult and I have created a simple system that will help you to get your business on-line and be able to connect with your customers on a consistent basis. You will be able to let them know when you are having a special. You can create specials on the fly and get your message out to your customers quickly, when you need to bring in some extra cash!

Our first webinar will be July 14th followed by the second one on July 28th. I will let you know at that point when the next one will be. You will be able to work on your website between sessions and be ready for the next step. This is going to be an exciting series.

Join us for this embroidery of the month webinar series and get your embroidery business on-line using the simple system that I have created! Don’t forget all EmbroideryTips and More Embroidery Club Members have the opportunity to attend for FREE! This webinar series is worth far more than your annual investment in your Embroidery Tips and More Club membership and you are getting two for the price of one!!

When I first started my embroidery business I thought that all I had to do was put out my sign to let everyone know that I was now in business! Along with that I placed a couple of adds in the newspaper. I thought that this would let everyone know that I was here and I would have all of the customers that I ever wanted or needed! Guess What! It didn’t quite work out that way!

I soon found out that getting customers was not as easy as I had envisioned! It really took a lot of work to get them coming into the doors! I really loved what I did and I had no plan or fore thought as to what I would do if the customers did not start to come to my place of business! Without that steady flow of customers, you have no business!

This is not the right way to get your business started! I learned very quickly that I needed to have a plan about every aspect of my business and Marketing was no exception.

As a result of having no plan, it took me a little longer to get started! I have made a ton of mistakes over the past 30 years, but I learned from my mistakes and that makes it easier for me to teach you how to avoid most of the mistakes that I made.

My Webinar this month is on “How To Market Your Embroidery Business Even In These Hard Times!” We are going through some slow economic times right now, but that does not mean it has to be slow for all of us! It will take a little more effort on our parts to keep those customers, to get new referrals and create a larger customer base, but it can be done!

During out Webinar, I will show you how all of this is possible! January 27, 2009 at 8PM EST.

I am currently working with a company that has been in the embroidery business for many years, but has recently been sold. This is a medium sized company with several multi-head embroidery machines that creates a top quality finished product!

The new owners are…
keeping the same management in place and want to increase their embroidery production flow using all of the same equipment that is currently in production with no plans of any new equipment purchases in the near future. This can be done, but first a new organization plan must be put into effect. By that I mean a work flow organization that also includes a change in the paper work flow and some of the current production processes.

After reviewing many of the current processes I am finding out that a lot of time is wasted in their movements during the processes and going from one process to another. It is extremely important to know exactly how much time it takes to do every single step within the entire manufacturing or embroidery process.

This process starts at the exact moment that an order is taken and continues through all of the steps of planning and manufacturing right up until it is billed. Each one of these steps has a time and cost associated with it. The work flow should be time studied at each stage of development to see if there is another way or movement that can be changed or incorporated to help the process be done more efficiently and quickly. It is very important to keep track of each one of these steps in the total process.

I have found that in most cases there is not enough thought put into the planning process before each step. This is especially important as a small embroidery business is growing and expanding into a larger organization.
